October 2022 Blog Post

A word from Highline College’s Athletics Department

Consistency seems to be harder and harder to achieve in this day and age but in the last 10 years of change and turmoil within our community, Athletics has remained the consistent. We have recruited and retained on average 120 to 140 student athletes each year. We have generated yearly between 1.5 and 2 million dollars for the college in FTE’s, Tuition, Fees, Books, and Dorm use. Over 75% of our graduating Sophomores have moved on to 4 – year institutions. On the field of play we have excelled with 20 Division Titles, 6 NWAC Titles, 3 National Junior College Academic Nation Champion Titles, numerous NWAC Players of the year, League MVP’s along with too many to count All League Players & Academic All-Americans. Throughout, the student athletes, through hard work, accountability, and a pride in the College and the community have represented Highline at the highest of levels. But it is the Coaches and Staff that have continued to make this possible. Without their tireless efforts, endless pursuit of excellence and their commitment to our students and the college, none of this would be possible. If you combine our entire Head Coaching Staff, Directors, and Facility manager, we have over 160 years of Highline College experience and have mentored well over 4000 student athletes. Impressive to say the least! These are the people I get to work with:

Tom Moore, Highline College Graduate, Huntingdon College Graduate, Ohio U Masters Graduate, 20 years of service to the College, 2 NWAC Women’s Soccer Titles, 8 West Division Titles, 2 NWAC Coach of the Year, 8 West Division Coach of the year, part time instructor, Co-Intramural Director, and husband to Arica.

Daimen Crump, Highline College Graduate, Concordia College Graduate, Ohio University Graduate, 15 years of service to the College, Head Women’s Basketball Coach for 5 years, Full Time Instructor, Husband to Kristi, father to Nya and Jalea.

Chris Littleman, 15 years of service to the College, Head Women’s Coach 14 years, 4 West Division Titles, 4 West Region Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach University of Washington Beach Volleyball, Part Time instructor.

Laura Rosa, Washington State Graduate, 15 years of service to the college, Head Coach Tennis 6 years, 3 Division Titles, 1 NWAC Title, NWAC Coach of the Year 2 times, Academic Advisor for athletics, NWAC Women’s Commissioner, NWAC DEI Committee, NWAC Compliance Committee, part time faculty, Full time faculty, Wife to Hailama, mother to Makoa, Kainoa, Mia, Pona, Kana.

Steve Turcotte, University of Oregon Graduate, 5 years of service to college, Head Golf Coach, Part-Time instructor, Co-Director Intramurals, Game Day Specialist, Husband to Debbie, father to Rebecca, Spenser & Dylan.

Kristine Foley, First year Coach Women’s Softball, Mother to Rory, Georgia, Wilder, and Easton.

Makoa Rosa, Graduate of Hawaii Hilo, 5 years of Service to the college, Assistant Athletic Director, Assistant Tennis Coach, part time instructor.

Barry Carel, Central Washington University Graduate, 21 years of service to the College, Facilities Director, Game day Supervisor, PE Operations, Athletics Operations.

So, help us celebrate our Student Athletes, Coaches, and Staff. Currently all three Fall Teams, Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Soccer and Men’s Soccer are in 1st place in their Divisions, so why not take some time out of your busy day to come down to see these amazing Student Athletes and these tireless dedicated Coaches. All Home games are listed on the Athletics Web Site and all Students, Faculty, and Staff get in free.  Go T-Birds.

– J. Dunn, Athletics Director

Tom Moore: (Staff)

My name is Tom Moore.  I’m the Head Women’s Soccer coach at Highline College, and a PT Faculty in the Physical Education Department. My role has included allowing the student-athletes a chance to determine what direction our program is primarily headed for that season through feedback and goal-setting objectives.  The management of the team is determined by each individual player and their personalities within the framework of the team.  Due to this circumstance alone, every player is directly involved in the development and management of our program.  The student-athletes that participate within the women’s soccer program have gone out and run community events for kids, volunteered time within the community, and have been placed in environments that have allowed them to flourish as people.  These experiences, along with the character-building exercises associated with forming a team, are what allow participants within our program to successfully complete the challenging tasks placed upon them daily.  Having the background of team building, role of individuality within the framework of a team, setting goals/expectations with objectives in order to fulfill them, working through adversity while relying on yourself and your team, opening up socially to allow cultures/beliefs from within the diversity of the team to have a positive effect, and all of this helping form the person you want to be in the future while attending Highline College.   I have been able to give these student-athletes a chance to work in a diversified environment.  The challenges posed upon them have caused huge growth and has allowed them to take what they’ve learned and experienced and use it as tools in the success of their lives.   The total experience of working in a team environment from attaining common goals, working through every day challenges of life, and realizing how individuality plays an important role within a team are just a few of the great assets within the women’s soccer program.  We preach the stages of development in a team as we set these goals.  They understand the importance of Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning within the framework of being a successful team.  These lessons alone help each and every student-athlete from the women’s soccer team to step into an environment of adversity/diversity, and still understand the means to a positive/successful end.  All of this is accomplished while also setting your own expectations and aspiring to be the best student, player, and person you can be.  Our purpose is to help, in any way possible, the formation of these student-athletes and produce an environment that helps them to be positive role models and productive members of society while enjoying every minute of it.  I also have the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of students within my class environments on campus/online.  This allows me to continue to make a positive impact among adults both young and old.  I offer help, advice, experience in most any situation I can while working with students.  I can only hope to make a positive lasting impression that supports the ideals I have tried to put forth in all I’ve done here at the college for the last 20 years.  Having been a student here at Highline College myself, I feel like I can connect and understand the path that many junior college students are on.

Student Spotlight:

Athletics has chosen sophomore tennis player Princess Ventura as our “Student Spotlight”. Princess began at Highline as a Running Start student and stayed on when she was recruited to play for the Thunderbird Tennis Team. Princess has been named captain for the 22-23 season and will be leading the team in the attempt to defend the NWAC Championship title. She maintains a 3.92 GPA and is a proud first-generation student of color. We interviewed Princess about her time thus far as a student at Highline.

  1. What has been your favorite class at Highline College so far and why?
    1. My favorite class so far at Highline College has been Ceramics because it helps me dig deep into my artistic side. There are no limits to your imagination and what you build in the class. It was also a huge stress reliever compared to my other classes.
  1. Who has made the most positive impact on your journey as a college student and how has this person supported you?

  1. What has been your biggest challenge at Highline College?
    1. My biggest challenge was probably how school was impacted by COVID. I love being in class, asking questions and getting to know people but COVID definitely made it harder with online classes. Although it wasn’t impossible to connect with peers, it was more difficult because it was all through online.
  1. Knowing what you know now, what advice would give to someone just starting their first quarter of college?
    1. HAVE A PLANNER! You are getting used to building your own schedule and unlike high school, teachers tend to give you full responsibility for your work and actions. Having a planner is a way to keep yourself organized as much as possible.
  1. And just for fun: What would your perfect day off from all responsibilities look like?
    1. I would spend the day going out in nature and exploring all the beauty of Washington (hikes, road trips, etc.)
