June 2021 Blog Post

Celebrations, Liberations and Persistence!

Jennifer Scanlon happily reunited with parents.

The month of June is a month of celebrations and this June 2021 the Student Services Division would like to recognize the significant achievements that our students have made in the past year.

On June 17th, we celebrate Commencement and acknowledge students who are completing degrees and diplomas. We recognize the many obstacles, sacrifices and challenges our students face when making a commitment to achieving your educational goals, and we celebrate your perseverance and belief in yourself! We celebrate the staff and faculty who each play an important role in supporting students in reaching their goals.

On June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth, which is now officially recognized as a Washington State Holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 in Galveston, Texas when the last of enslaved people learned that slavery had been abolished and that they were free. While we still must recognize that the struggles for equity persist, on this day, Juneteenth, we celebrate black people and black culture.

June is National LGBTQ+ Pride Month in which we celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ+ people, and we reflect on the trials and tribulations faced by trailblazers of the community, and we recognize our responsibility to furthering their cause towards equity.

On June 20th, we celebrate Fathers Day honoring fatherhood and father figures who dedicate themselves to guiding, loving or supporting the growth and well-being of others.

And finally, this June 20th marks the solstice, the official first day of Summer. And this Summer we celebrate science, scientists, science students, teachers, health care workers and all involved in saving and improving lives through the development and delivery of vaccines to our community.   This Summer we have new hope for reconnecting with family, friends, instructors, and students in a safer environment.

This month please take time to reflect on the achievements you have made this academic year. Take time to celebrate the contributions of others, and thank those who have played a role in your growth, your freedoms, and your health. The photo above shows my parents and me reuniting after more than a year apart.

Pictured: Heydie Martinez, Transition Success Center

Heydie Martinez works in the Transition Success Center. She provides support to students and assists 1:1 in developing educational goals, registering for classes, FAFSA and WASFA applications. In addition, she provided ctcLINK navigation support and registration applications. Heydie is always taking the extra step by flexing her schedule to meet with students even during break. She is constantly providing feedback during staff meetings to improve services and students’ experiences navigating college.

Heydie is very busy and has a 2nd job. However, she engages in other campus events from CLS and ICC to enhance their understanding of other cultures and social justice topics. In addition, Heydie collaborates with other departments to coordinate workshops that would benefit students. She has demonstrated to always care and put students first no matter what the situation. Heydie has great work ethic, showing up to work hours on time and willing to contribute ideas to improve services to students.

Please join us in congratulating Heydie Martinez!
