Honoring Change
As we approach a year of Highline College being closed to the public due to COVID-19, I want to remind us all that we will get through this together with continued grace and perseverance. The impacts of the pandemic has altered all of our lives. I encourage you all to give each other grace as we navigate Washington state guidelines to serve our Highline Community. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!
Before I continue, I want to thank Jennifer Scanlon for sharing her story with us in our January blog. Jen, your vulnerability with the Highline Community has hit home for me as I have also faced a “Change’ in my family with the loss of my sister/cousin Randi Jones-Gratton on November 30th. I know there are faculty, staff and students whom are facing personal challenges and I want you all to know that you are not alone. Take one day at a time. We will have good days and bad days. To Highline employees, please access Employee Assistance Program (EAP). To Highline students, please access your Academic Support. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!
“The theme for February blog is “Honoring Change.” With ctcLink approaching I want to look a change through the lens of our historic leaders. What our ancestors have endured is who we are today and whom we carry with us as we enter our various spaces. Remember that we too, are part of the “Change” at Highline and I want us all to continue the good fight! Highline’s Go Live date is next Monday, February 8, 2021 and this will be a true collective effort to migrate to the new web based platform for the institution. During next week, faculty and staff will be receiving their new log in credentials and will begin our journey of navigating ctcLink so that we can do our part in supporting each other and our students. The week of February 16th, students will begin activating their ctcLink logins and begin their journey. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!
As we celebrate Black History Month, I want us all to imagine what it would have been like to be a part of meetings for the March on Washington; The Montgomery Bus Boycott; sneaking to meet with Harriet Tubman; preparing to attend Little Rock Central High School….. The list goes on. These individual and collective acts are monumental “Changes” that have moved our nation to elect the first highest-ranking Black and Asian Female as Vice President of the United States of America. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!
So Highline, the “Change” is finally here as I have been hearing about this system change since I begin at Highline in October of 2009 (LOL). We are all doing our best to navigate our lives during this pandemic and ask that we continue to give each other grace. I personally am feeling the toll of being at home during a pandemic and I have to acknowledge this for myself so that I am able to refocus for my family and Highline Community. Students, good luck with mid-terms and the Highline Community migrating to ctcLink. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!

February Student Leader of the Month: Duncan Dao
This month we would like to recognize and celebrate Duncan Dao for his efforts and contribution made during the month of January! Duncan is a Vietnamese-American Running Start student, working on an Associate of Arts so he can transfer to a four-year school and pursue a degree in Marine Sciences. Duncan’s involvement around campus in AANAPISI, Active Minds, and other clubs and events is what earned him this month’s Student Leader of the Month title. Duncan has been a model student, dedicating his time to actively engaging in campus activities. His participation in Highline events, clubs and ASHC executive council meetings has shown how exemplary his service is and his peers have noticed a growth in his leadership abilities. Outside of Highline, Duncan’s favorite hobbies are fish keeping, reading, sketching, socializing, electronic interactive entertainment, and reading on the internet. What inspired him to become a student leader is:
“The hope of being able to work towards a more scientifically advanced future by improving myself to contribute to society. My ideal is to be able to pioneer and discover new underwater territory as a pathfinder. Even if it’s a little bit far-fetched and in the far future, it’s at least some small amount of hope I can work with.”
I think we can all agree that Duncan’s self improvement efforts are paying off and we hope to see him continue to do great things on his journey to become a marine scientist. Thank you Duncan for supporting the Highline College Community!
