Welcoming Fall

By Tom Park

Although we’re faced with yet another 90+ degree heat wave, the calendar is coming up on the transition to Autumn in a short 22 days.

As someone who is from the East Coast, lived in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the deep South, and now in the PNW, I continue to wholeheartedly believe the fall, in the 4-Seasons regions, is the best time of the year.  Although the PNW is wetter than everywhere else, there are still opportunities where “I will go out of my way to step on a crunchy leaf (credit: unknown).”  It’s the fresh, crisp air, the smell of wood
burning stoves, and the chill of the breeze off the Sound that all combine to make fall in the PNW like no other.

Some of my fondest memories are from the fall – going apple picking with family and friends, visiting pumpkin patches and corn mazes, and enjoying warm apple cider with freshly made apple cider donuts creating a nostalgia right out of a Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post cover.  We all have our favorite times of the year from the sunny days of summer, to the occasional snow of winter, and even the gloomy rain most of the rest of the year.  Each of us have those particular sights, sounds, and smells that drum-up core memories to take us back to a time in our lives that were simpler and carefree.  As the calendar transitions from Summer to Fall, both in weather and academics, take the time to step on a crunchy leaf or enjoy the smell of the first fall rain, because it is little things in life that we experience that makes it all worth it.
