Revisiting Our Past, Forging Our Future
By Ay Saechao, Dean of Student Support & Funding Services,
Hello Highline Scholars,
June is an amazing month. The sun is out longer with better weather, and many of you will be graduating and moving onto your next educational or career journey. It’s a time of celebration, a time to harbor the fruits of our labor. Before we do that, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we got here.
Think of the families, friends, teachers, mentors and people close in your life who have helped shaped you to be the person you are today. Remember their words and actions that have touched your heart. Recall a time where you had an “aha” moment, a moment of clarity, compassion, or life’s lesson that sprinkled on your proverbial doorstep. Did that interaction give you inspiration, helped prioritize your life’s goals, or provided you with further conviction and direction? In addition, how did those interactions shape your value system? Did it elevate the importance of family, health, community, financial stability, or other values and perspectives?
The past two years have been extremely busy. You’ve had to balance many responsibilities from work, school, family and self. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of it all, we lose track of how we got to where we are. Never forget why you started Highline College in the first place. Always keep close to those who have helped you along the way as they will continue to be with you. That person, memory or value that led you to the doors of Highline will continue to propel you forward. They will serve as a beacon, no matter how choppy the waters maybe. In turn, you will also serve as light for others in need.
With that, CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES, class of 2022! For those who are continuing on at Highline, we look forward to be part of your journey in the quarters to come.
Lastly, I leave you with a quote from a powerful light of mine, who has inspired me and kept me grounded, especially the past two years:
“In an ideal world we would all learn in childhood to love ourselves. We would grow, being secure in our worth and value, spreading love wherever we went, letting our light shine. If we did not learn self-love in our youth, there is still hope. The light of love is always in us, no matter how cold the flame. It is always present, waiting for the spark to ignite, waiting for the heart to awaken and call us back to the first memory of being the life force inside a dark place waiting to be born – waiting to see the light.” – Bell Hooks
