Celebrating the Small Wins

Dear Highline Family,

This May brings the bounty and abundance of springtime: new life, new growth, and rejuvenation. Yet at the same time, this May is an extension of last May, one of loss, trauma, isolation, and forced circumstances. At Highline, May marks the beginning of celebrating student success, our resilience, and the unique way each of you are leaving your imprint and legacy as a scholar, leader, and valued community member. Know that you are great, you are powerful, and have an entire community of fellow students, staff, and faculty who are on this journey with you. Remember to celebrate the small wins while also preparing for the bigger ones. In times like these, we are collectively exposed to a common experience, while experiencing them so differently. This is why the small wins matter! Getting out of bed, choosing to show up, and making the sacrifices of physical distancing and masking up are examples of small wins worth celebrating. What is your small win for today? How will you celebrate this success?

Aside from being your associate dean for student life, I am also a doctoral student, a partner, a family member, a dog mom, and a recovering perfectionist. When the pandemic hit, I too braced myself not sure how I would remain engaged as a learner in the classroom, carry the responsibilities as the oldest child in my family, be the steady and calm leader that you have known me to be at Highline, and be present while physically distant with family, friends, and colleagues deeply impacted by the racial trauma we are undeniably confronted with. Fast forward a year later, I still feel the tension and uncertainty of how to hold space for myself and others with only 24 hours in a day. However, I give myself grace for trying my best and resting when I am not able to offer others my best self.

Attend to yourself, attend to your communities, attend to your social mission in life, and attend to your studies. Celebrate those small wins and be filled with joy for the big wins! As you journey through the springtime abundance, remember to attend to your own radical self-love. In the beautiful and timely words of Audre Lorde “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

 In community,

Iesha Valencia (she/her), Associate Dean for Student Life
